The threat of a school shooting on social media is likely a hoax

A social media post threatening a school shooting on Friday is likely a hoax, according to an article published by the Bellingham Herald on Thursday.

kxly4 has received several messages from concerned parents about a Facebook post from a “Ray Andres” threatening to shoot an “SHS” in Spokane at a school. However, police in Bellingham, Washington say it is likely a hoax as the same messages circulated in Whatcom County on Thursday.

“We encourage staff and families to reassure students that this message is a hoax and that their safety is our top priority,” Bellingham School District Superintendent Greg Baker said. He added that Bellingham Police investigated and determined there was no credible threat. “We understand that this message comes at a particularly sensitive time for students following last week’s shooting in Parkland, Florida.”

Bellingham Police believe the message, which was widely reported and disseminated in different parts of Washington state, originated from another state, possibly Ohio.
