San Diego’s Media Arts Center / Digital Gym is one of seven arthouse cinemas across the country to be selected as partners in the upcoming 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
The famous festival, located in Park City, Utah, this year launched the Satellite Screens program to better connect the event and independent filmmakers to local audiences.
The center, which will soon reopen in the East Village area of San Diego, joins the arthouse theaters of Washington, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Tennessee as as Sundance partners for the festival, which is scheduled to begin Jan. 20.
“We are thrilled,” said Moisés Esparza, director of exhibitions at the San Diego center, of the association with Sundance.
Each satellite screen will present a selection of the official festival program during the closing weekend, January 28-30. The festival list will be announced later this year.
“Regional cinemas are a crucial part of independent cinema and are essential centers of discovery, conversation and coming together in their communities. We look forward to teaming up with each of them to do what we all love – watching and talking about movies together, ”said Gina Duncan, Production Manager, Sundance Institute.
Digital Gym moved from its longtime home in North Park last year. The cinema is slated to open in December on the second floor of the new UC San Diego @ Park & Market building, 1100 Market St.
