Media Arts Center San Diego ushers in a new era with a new location

San Diego Media Arts Center (MACSD) is excited to usher in a new era with the announcement of its new location! Its doors are set to reopen this fall inside the state-of-the-art facility – UC San Diego @ Park & Market, the University’s new building located in the heart of downtown San Diego.

A momentous occasion

Media Arts Center San Diego was founded over 29 years ago with a mission to provide film resources and educational initiatives to up-and-coming communities in San Diego. Despite the pandemic, MACSD has been able to move its programming to virtual platforms to continue fulfilling its commitments to the community.

The opening of the new space is a momentous occasion, allowing the MACSD team to relaunch all of its in-person programming. Educational initiatives such as the Teen Producers Project and Youth Media and Tech Camps will be produced, in person, at the new location.

A brand new Digital Gym Cinema

The new Digital Gym Cinema will be located on the second floor of the building, adjacent to both a gallery and a terrace with views. A concession stand will be in operation during movie hours. The MACSD office will be on the third floor and will include access to classrooms for our youth and teen media literacy initiatives. The Digital Gym Cinema soft launch is scheduled for October 2021. Plans for an opening reception are underway, as well as previews for community members and media.

“We are thrilled to finally be able to announce our new partnership with UC San Diego. We would like to thank Mary Walshok and everyone at University of California San Diego who championed our community film and education programs to make them a reality. The pandemic has put a brief halt to our in-person outreach, so it will be extra special to see our Digital Gym Cinema moviegoers back in our new state-of-the-art movie theater. We look forward to seeing the smiling faces of all of our young and teen filmmakers at our year-round film camps at the new East Village facilities.
– Ethan van Thillo, executive director and founder of the Media Arts Center in San Diego.

UC San Diego @ Park & Market is located at the corner of Park Avenue and Market Street in the thriving East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego. The four-story, 66,750 square foot mixed-use office building is strategically located one stop from the San Diego light rail – physically connecting San Diego East and South counties, the Baja Mexico area, and the building to the main campus from UC San Diego to La Jolla, thanks to two new trolley stops.

The new building will be an innovative collective hub for artistic, scientific, civic, business, innovation and education entities to deliver diverse programs that leverage the breadth and depth of the city’s most creative endeavors. .

See you soon… and stay healthy, San Diego!
