San Diego, CA-Media Arts Center San Diego is moving to a new location!

Its doors are slated to reopen this fall inside UC San Diego’s state-of-the-art facilities at Park and Market, the university’s new building located in the heart of downtown San Diego.

The art center was founded over 29 years ago with a mission to provide film resources and educational initiatives to promising communities in San Diego. Despite the pandemic, the arts center was able to move its programming to virtual platforms to continue to fulfill its commitments to the community. The opening of the new space allows the art center team to relaunch all of its face-to-face programming. Educational initiatives such as the Teen Producers Project and Youth Media and Tech Camps will be produced, in person, at the new site.

The new Digital Gym Cinema will be located on the second floor of the building, adjacent to both a gallery and an overhanging terrace. A concession stand will be in operation during cinema hours. The art centre’s office will be on the third floor and will include access to classrooms for media education initiatives for youth and adolescents. The soft launch of the Digital Gym cinema is October 2021. Plans for an opening reception are underway, along with preview events for community members and media.

“The pandemic has put our in-person outreach to a brief stop, so it will be very special to see our Digital Gym Cinema moviegoers again in our new state-of-the-art movie theater. We look forward to seeing the smiling faces of all of our young and teenage filmmakers at our year-round filming camps at the new facilities in the East Village, ”said Executive Director and Founder of the Media Arts Center San Diego, Ethan van Thillo.

The 66,750-square-foot, four-story mixed-use office building is strategically located at a Trolley stop – physically connecting the eastern and southern counties of San Diego, the Baja Mexico area, and the building to the main campus from UC San Diego to La Jolla. The new building will be an innovative collective hub for artistic, scientific, civic, business, innovation and education entities to deliver diverse programs that take advantage of the breadth and depth of the most creative efforts of the city.

UC San Diego at Park and Market is located on the corner of Park Avenue and Market Street in the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego.
