The federal government is contributing more than $ 1.1 million to the project under the Community, Cultural and Recreational Infrastructure (CCRIS) component of the Investing in Canada plan. In the meantime, the provincial government will contribute more than $ 980,000 to the new Windsor Center for Film, Digital Media and the Creative Arts.
The center itself will contribute more than $ 790,000 to the project that will open inside the Downtown Mission building located in the 600 block of Victoria Avenue.
The center recently purchased the old church structure for $ 900,000.
“The Media Arts Community Center has been in the planning phase for several years,” said Amanda Gellman, president of the center. “It all started with Film Camp for Kids and Youth, which is an educational program for children and adolescents.

The goal was to train local talent at a young age and then retain them locally so they didn’t have to travel to large urban areas to find jobs, she said.
“We promised to do our part to stop the exodus of local talent from southwestern Ontario,” said Gellman. “Thanks to the generosity of our federal and provincial governments today, this promise has been kept.

Investing in community, cultural and recreational infrastructure is key to building inclusive communities, said local MP Irek Kusmierczyk (L – Windsor-Tecumseh) on behalf of the federal government.
“The new Center for Film, Digital Media and Creative Arts announced today will contribute to the culture and diversity of the City of Windsor while providing more educational and recreational opportunities for residents,” said he declared.
