UNIVERSITY AND DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Located in Suzhou, Yangtze Delta region, China, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a young and dynamic English medium-taught university founded in 2006. It is a unique collaborative institution and the first joint venture university. in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and China (Department of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees for over 100 programmes. XJTLU has ambitious goals to become a world-class research-led institution and has made significant investments in research development and increasing the number of masters and doctoral students on campus. The university has over 18,000 students and almost 1,000 academic staff representing over 90 nationalities, and plans to grow to around 25,000 students by 2025.

The initial and main campus of XJTLU is located in the higher education city of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), well connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo and Taipei, and via trains at high speed to other major cities. in China, including near Shanghai. Greater Suzhou is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China by GDP.

XJTLU is finalizing the construction of a new education, research and entrepreneurship campus in Taicang, Greater Suzhou. Opened in September 2022, industry-themed entrepreneurship schools and degrees have been established in collaboration with the Taicang municipal government and industry partners, and will be a central pillar of the strategic priorities of the university for the next ten years.

Brief summary of the Academy of Film and Creative Technology:

The newly created Academy, launched on 22n/a May 2021, is the result of bringing together the two existing schools of Cultural Technology and Film and Television Arts, under one academic roof. Unique within XJTLU, the Academy is multi-site, providing cross-site opportunities for students, staff, industry and society.

Building on the core values ​​of the university, the Academy brings together the fields of media, creativity and technology in the context of society to establish an international cultural ecosystem, driven by the generation of knowledge to advance industry and shape the future society. The Academy is located both on the SIP campus, through the School of Film and Television Arts; and at the new Taicang campus as part of the new College of Entrepreneurs, through the School of Cultural Technology. There are also ambitious plans to develop further educational, research and creative technology facilities both in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province and the Greater Bay Area.

AFCT offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs through its schools, short-term non-degree professional training programs, research and knowledge transfer services, and builds partnerships and interacts with industries and society.

About the School of Film and Television Arts

The School of Film and Television Arts was built on the department’s strengths in film arts, visual storytelling, and culture. With the addition of a film school and hands-on training in filmmaking, television production, streaming media and the creative arts. The school develops a blend of practice, research, creativity and industry engagement with the film, television, visual arts and creative industry sectors in China and abroad. The school currently offers programs in Digital Media Arts, Television Production, and Filmmaking at the UG level. Future plans include the creation of postgraduate and doctoral programs in the fields of cultural and creative industries.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Coordinate and deliver modules in a range of areas of digital media arts, television production and film
  2. Prepare content and lesson plans for module delivery
  3. Curriculum development
  4. Manage the media production of projects within the School or with industry partners, both within the program and as part of School-approved extracurricular activities
  5. Supervise and/or advise on creative projects
  6. Contribute to the development of school programs
  7. Provide services and at least 10 office hours for school counseling; attend school meetings, committees; organization of events, etc.
  8. Publish research/creation results
  9. Work assigned by supervisor/or Academy leaders

PERSONAL QUALITIES: Successful candidates will have academic and/or industrial experience directly related to Digital Media Arts, AnimationVisual effects and or Interactive design projects. He/she will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of creative design processes. They will also be required to teach fundamental modules on visual aesthetics and design, including visual communication, 2D/graphic design and creative media skills. In terms of advanced specialties, the person should have developed extensive practices in areas related to motion media, for example expressive motion graphics, visual storytelling, interactive media or other applications geared towards generating creative content.

We are open to candidates who present themselves with high relevance for these attributes. Specifically, the successful candidate will work with existing staff whose expertise is geared towards the media and entertainment industry. We therefore highly value the experience directly related to such an industry. The number of positions available and their desired specialties are:

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

Terminal degrees (PhD/MFA) in relevant fields

Research (desirable) and teaching experience in academia

In-depth working knowledge of software related to digital media arts, e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, 2D/3D media authoring applications, After Effect, Maya, interactive content development tools

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  • The ability to teach creative design processes to digital media arts students.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies such as VR, AR.
  • Knowledge of design management and practical opportunities for aspiring motion designers.
  • Highly developed organizational skills: The ability to anticipate events, identify desirable outcomes and achieve goals within a specified time frame.
  • High level of verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and to work collaboratively within the School.
  • Experience or willingness to develop practice-based research/applied research
  • Planning and curating exhibitions/shows

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

Annual base pay scale:

Lecturer: 280k-320k RMB

Assistant professor: 360k-400k RMB

Associate Professor: 450k-490k RMB

Academic staff members are entitled to subsidies for accommodation, travel and education of children, medical insurance and a one-time relocation allowance. Staff abroad may benefit from a “tax holiday” depending on their nationality and personal situation.

Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese labor laws and must comply with provincial government regulations. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with respect to obtaining work permits and visas.
